Daniel dives into the life of Julian, learning how he had fled to Paris where he wrote his 3 novels of which “La Sombra Del Viento” is the 3 rd, and how he was found dead after a duel in the gutters of Barcelona, his hometown and where his whole story goes on.ĭaniel grows with this book beside him and soon finds a trusty ally to help him: Férmin, a homeless man (former soldier from the Civil War, as we later find out), whom he shelters and to whom his father work in the bookshop. He is not stopped when he finds all his works had been burned neither when he is faced with a deadly chase by Inspector Fumero and his heavy fists. From the moment he started to read the words of Julian Carax, Daniel was hooked and wouldn’t rest until he had found more about this author. This boy is Daniel Sampere and little did this bookshop owner’s son knew how much this book would imprint on his life. There he was told to choose one book and guard it with his life. This story is about one of those books, hidden in a secret place in Barcelona where, one night, a father brought his son to pass on the secret legacy. This book, first, is an ode to all the used bookstores (in Portugal alfarrabistas), those little quiet corner stores where you can find lost, forgotten books…books that were almost erased from the reader’s wondering eye and wait there to wonder the one who picks it up. “You only love truly once in your life, Julian, even if you don’t realise it”Ĭarlos Ruiz-Zafón in The Shadow of the Wind “Books are like mirrors: we only see in them what we bring inside”
